What is Clinical Neurophysiology?

Clinical Neurophysiology (CN) is a relatively new but expanding investigative and diagnostic specialty.  The Clinical Neurophysiology evaluation describes and quantifies function and pathophysiologic changes in the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems and muscles.

There are 3 principal groups of investigations:

·      Electroencephalography (EEG), which is used to evaluate brain function and to investigate possible seizures and epilepsy.

·      Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) & Electromyography (EMG) describe the functional status of the peripheral nervous, neuromuscular and autonomic systems.

·      Evoked Potential (EP) studies are quantitative evaluations of the integrity of several specific sensory pathways in the peripheral and central nervous systems.
